The Security Project in concert at the Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland, OH, 14th November 2017. Review by Jason Douglas Moore.
If you like Peter Gabriel’s first four albums, then this is the band for you! Security Project is the creation of Jerry Marotta who served as Gabriel’s drummer for the first ten years of his solo career. Marotta, Trey Gunn (bass guitar) Michael Cozzi (guitars) and David Jameson (keyboards) are joined by vocalist Happy Rhodes to round out this group that goes beyond the “tribute” or “covers” label and serves to give new blood (pun intended) to the older PG material with new arrangements and a female voice. Simply put, it sounded terrific!
The band is out on tour to support their new album - “Contact”. When they opened with Fly On A Windshield I was already a happy concertgoer. Jerry Marotta is a legend on th kit and his power and touch are evident in every track. Trey Gunn impressed me to no end with his mastery of the touch guitar.
Admittedly I do not know much about this instrument but after watching his powerful performance I plan on doing a bit of Google research. Michael Cozzi weaves his guitar tones in and out of each performance and was equally thrilling. On keyboards. David Jameson keeps it all together with masterful playing, particularly his piano intro to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Then there were the vocals. Happy Rhodes does a wonderful job at capturing the spirit and power of all these Gabriel goodies. Her vocals on I Don’t Remember, Lead A Normal Life, games Without Frontiers, No Self Control and I Have The Touch are flawless and fit well within the arrangements. She gives a fresh perspective on these tracks and demonstrates both the power of Gabriel’s epic songs and her own fantastic voice. Other Gabriel tracks performed included: The Rhythm Of the Heat, San Jacinto and Lay Your Hands On Me. |
For the encore, Jerry sang back In NYC and I will certainly be ready to go back to Cleveland to see this great band the next time they are in town!
Note; all of the band’s albums are available via the Bandcamp app.
