"Telling Both Sides Of The Story" - The Phil Collins Story Part Four: Both Sides. Narrated by Alan Hewitt with thanks to A. Callingham, S. Town, H. Janisch and B. McGrath.
Phil's tour in support of the "...But Seriously" album ended in New York in October 1990, having taken him and the band around the world. The album became his biggest seller to date with a number one slot in eleven countries at one point! The remainder of 1990 through the summer of 1993 were taken up by further duties with Genesis in the writing, recording and touring of the "We Can't Dance" album, Phil's last appearance with the band was at the Cowdrey ruins charity gig in September 1993. Prior to that, Phil's second attempt at a film was released, "Frauds" was an Australian backed film in which Phil played the part of an insurance salesman from hell. Sadly, the film failed to live up to his previous effort "Buster" although it was an enjoyable effort nonetheless. Phil had also been working on what in November 1993 was to become his fifth solo album "Both Sides". The album was to become something of a kindred spirit to Phil's first solo album "Face Value" in as much as it was another dark, introspective affair, reflecting the problems which he was undergoing in his life at the time; problems exacerbated by the incessant coverage they were given by the tabloid press both at home and elsewhere. |

First fruits from the album was the title track "Both Sides Of The Story" which was released on October 18 1993; another dramatic song although one which failed to quite match the impact of the opening cut from Phil's previous album, "Another Day In Paradise". Nevertheless the single charted at the number five slot here in the UK, and achieved similar positions in most territories. "Both Sides" was issued on November 20, 1993 and was an immediate hit at the number one slot in the UK. The album was a stark contrast to its predecessor for one thing - Phil had played all the instruments on it himself which made for a much leaner sounding record. The record also saw Phil in a much more philosophical mood with songs dealing with family relationships, pre-judgement of people based on colour, race or religion and even an examination of terrorism and our indifference to it due to excessive mileage coverage. The album was certainly a surprise to both fans and critics; the latter however, were more eager to sensationalise the problems which Phil was going through with his wife Jill which were eventually to lead to their divorce in 1995. |

A second single was issued from the album on January 3, 1994; "Everyday" was coupled with another mix of live, demo and unreleased material although once again the single only pierced the lower reaches of the top twenty in the UK. A third single "We Wait & We Wonder" was issued shortly after Phil's tour to promote the album had begun, sadly this, in many people's opinions, one of the strongest tracks on the "Both Sides" album, failed to make any impression on the UK charts. The "Both Sides" tour got under way after rehearsals in Dallas with two shows at the Prins Van Oranje Hal in Utrecht Holland. Phil's touring band had expanded even more until it was almost an orchestra and they played their way through a gruelling two and three quarter hour set which comprised the following tracks: Part One: The Dark Side: Drum Solo / I Don't Care Anymore / Don't Lose My Number / Everyday / Survivors / Another Day In Paradise / I Can't Find My Way / I Wish It Would Rain Down / One More Night / A Groovy Kind Of Love / We wait & We Wonder / I've Forgotten Everything / Both Sides Of The Story Part Two: The Party: In The Air Tonight / Hang In Long Enough / Find A Way To My Heart / It Don't Matter To Me / I Missed Again / Behind The Lines / Easy Lover / Only You & I Know / Something Happened On The Way To Heaven / You Can't Hurry Love / Two Hearts / Sussudio / Helpless Heart / Against All Odds / Take me Home The tour was a truly global affair with dates running from April 1994 until May 1995. Inb fact, it was two separate tours; the "Both Sides Tour" in 1994 and the "Far Side Of The World Tour" in 1995 by which time Phil had played 145 shows to well over three million fans! |

During the tour there were several changes to the set including marvellous renditions of "Knocking On Heaven's Door", "My Girl" and even attempts by Phil to play an Aboriginal didgeridoo at several of his shows in Australia and memorable performances of "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes in the UK!
Unlike previous outings, however, there was no live video release to accompany the tour. The rumoured release of Phil's "Unplugged" session from August 1994 never materialised although an edited version was broadcast on TV in 1995. A video look at the rehearsals for the tour called "A Closer Look" was available at gigs on the tour with all proceeds from sales going to various homeless charities although ironically enough, it was also broadcast on the Independent TV Network in the UK the night before Phil's first UK show in November. The tour was not without its problems and one must pity the poor fans who went to Phil's shows in Sheffield who had their shows cancelled not once but TWICE. A nice gesture towards fans in the earthquake stricken city of Kobe in Japan was made, when Phil did a satellite link up broadcast from his show in the nearby city of Fukuoka. In fact, the 1995 leg of the tour was full of "firsts" for Phil and the band. Their shows in South Africa ranked among the first in that country by a Western artist after the end of Apartheid. Other shows in Jakarta, Manila and Taipei were other firsts for any member of Genesis. |

With the last show of the tour in Manila on May 16, Phil was to take a break in order to try and sort out his personal life but he must have taken immense satisfaction from a successful tour which saw him reach his biggest audience to date.
